My Favorite Anime Protagonists and why!

Note: I had another post planned but it didn’t go quite as planned so I’m doing this instead. This post is kinda an amalgamation of different post ideas I had.

Before I write this post they’re are a few things I would like to get out of the way first. Obviously this is my opinion, You don’t have to agree with my choices but you should at least be respectful of my opinions. Another thing to keep in mind is that this post is suppose to be a lot more of a chill post than anything, Don’t take it all that seriously. Now since that’s out of the way, lets start this!

Katsuragi Keima

Katsuragi Keima is one of, if not the most entertaining protagonist in any anime I’ve ever watched.

For those of you who don’t know who Keima is, he is the protagonist of the series “The World God Only Knows”

Keima’s whole ‘gimmick’ as a character is that he is an obsessive gamer who is tasked with trying to get women to fall in love with him for the sake of humanity. Sounds like a show made for incels but trust me it’s not

Keima has little to no interest in actually dating any of these girls, he more wants them to move on with the struggles in their lives. He’s shown many times to be a genuinely kind person and never takes advantage of the situation he’s in. His more ‘Outrageous traits’ are used for comedy, that comedy is mainly focused at him being a loser or at how ridiculous the concept of the show is, Basically what I’m saying is this show doesn’t have any lewd distasteful jokes aimed at the females, Keima is legit the most tasteful harem protagonist out there!

Just to recap the reasons I like Keima:
-He’s extremely funny
-He’s also very kind
-Plus he’s not a pervert, which is rare for harem protagonists (Nothing against pervert protagonists used for comedy but that’s not really my cup of tea)

Kraft Lawrence

Kraft Lawrence was one of the driving forces in making Spice and Wolf one of my favorite franchises of all time, I’ll talk about him here but I do plan on going more in depth about Lawrence when I eventually make a Spice and Wolf post.

Kraft Lawrence is the much more responsible one out of the Spice and Wolf duo. At first Lawrence is kinda unlikable but he really starts to grow on you, when you get to see how much he cares about his partner(Holo)

He’s constantly looking out for her safety and always goes the extra mile for her happiness. Despite his more jagged looking appearance he is probably one of the sweetest anime protagonists, which I really appreciate!

Lastly his dynamic with Holo is my favorite character dynamic in ANY anime, They both truly complete each other which you don’t really see in most other anime relationships.

Once again I’ll elaborate more in my Spice and Wolf blog post, that’s coming… Eventually!

Ichigo Kurosaki

Despite being from a series I dislike(Bleach) I can’t deny the fact that I love Ichigo’s character.

Ichigo represents everything I love in a character but in a much less ‘Conventional’ way. I’ll elaborate, most of my favorite fictional characters have a few traits that they all share. These traits I enjoy are Kindness, Determination and weakness, Ichigo is an embodiment of all these traits BUT not on the surface. Ichigo is stubborn, short-tempered, strong-willed, and impulsive, He also cares a lot about appearances (Maintaining a Cool look and his grades) BUT none of these things are necessarily bad and they lead into the traits I like in a character…

Ichigo’s stubbornness on his morals and his short temper make him VERY determined. Ichigo’s impulsiveness only comes into play while doing what he believe’s is right! Like protecting his friends, etc, This shows his kindness and his upstanding moral compass. Lastly him caring about appearances is his weakness, he’s not some idiot that doesn’t care about his grades like most other shounen protagonists, he cares which makes him weak but easy to relate to.

Peter Par- I mean Izuku Midoriya ‘Deku’

Deku is in my opinion the Peter Parker of anime, Aka an extremely relatable character and a symbol for the weak, let me explain…

Deku will be getting his own post at some point but I’ll take the time now to begin shedding a light on why I fucking love this character. Deku (As said in the previous paragraph) is 100% the Peter Parker of anime, He’s always given the short end of the stick in life but keeps fighting despite the adversities, He also never lets those adversities define who he is. Deku’s also not afraid to cry or show weakness, he feels so much more human than most other anime protagonists and it honestly pisses me off when I hear people call him a cry baby, It’s literally one of the worst takes you can give, because he ALWAYS has a reason to cry.

Deku also has so many moments that have empowered me, the 2 main ones that come to mind are in the beginning of the first season.

The first one was the infamous “You too can be a hero” moment, I don’t think I need to elaborate more on this scene since there are plenty of people who have analyzed the scene way better then I could ever dream of doing.

The scene I want to talk about much more is the scene where Deku ‘Punches the shit out of a big ass robot’ in the entrance exam…

This dumb little scene means a lot to me. It’s the culmination of all Deku’s hours of work and determination all let out in one punch. It’s fucking fantastic and exhilarating to watch.

So yeah I love Deku’s character a lot.

Jonathan Joestar

Jonathan Joestar represents the peak of humanity in the Jojo universe and is one of my favorite characters of all time.

Jonathan is one of the most respectable characters ever, His morals are upstanding, His determination is unbelievable, He is the peak of humanity.

A thing I hear people say about Jonathan that I find absolutely ridiculous is that he is a ‘Gary Stu’ anyone who says this 100% is a part skipper or just doesn’t pay attention at all. Jonathan has to go through more trials BY HIMSELF than any other Jojo, but he’s not perfect or invincible well doing it, he gets his ass kicked, he gets discouraged BUT the thing about Jonathan is that he refuses to ever give in. Determination does not equal a Gary Stu, This shouldn’t even have to be said but people don’t pay attention when it comes to phantom blood and just say things that are plain wrong.

Jonathan while being rich it never helps him, He doesn’t have the speed wagon foundation pulling things out of they’re ass for him like literally 70% of the other Jojos.

Jonathan is a kindhearted man fighting mainly by his lonesome in the cruel world of phantom blood!

Note: If I ever make another post like this Guts, Medaka and Gon will for sure get talked about in it

Thank you for reading!

Thank you all so much for reading this post, remember to NOT take this all too seriously, I mainly wrote this quickly for fun. Also I mainly focused on shounen this time around, maybe next time I do something like this I’ll focus on another genre.

  1. These are some really great choices Logy. We even share a couple of favourites in Deku and Jonathan!

I really like Deku myself for the same reason as you do: he’s a champion for the weak and the downtrodden. And as someone who was a lot like Deku, and still is, seeing him rise to the occasion and achieve his dreams is very inspiring.

Ichigo in particular was also a very interesting choice, especially since you’re not that big of a fan of the series he’s from. I never considered these points about Ichigo’s character before, so perhaps I need to reflect a bit more on how I’ve perceived his character for all this time. Really makes you think!

Anyhow, this was a very entertaining read and you did a great job here! I look forward to more!

Maybe I’ll even do my own protagonists post in response!

    1. The thing with Ichigo is that he matures quite quickly (for a shounen protagonist) from his delinquency and his character progression goes down the guardian branch as he opts to become the a protector of the people he cares for rather than being a staple chosen one that has to defeat the evil big bad because it is his destiny.
